Plan the move from your old computer so the important things come with you.

List what needs to move

Before replacing a computer, make a list of the files, applications, and connected devices you use. Include things you only open occasionally, such as tax records or a specialty program.

  • Documents, photos, and work files.
  • Applications and any license or subscription requirements.
  • Printers, external drives, and other peripherals.
  • Browser bookmarks and the accounts you need to sign into.

Make a backup before the move

Keep a separate copy of important files before changing or retiring the old computer. Confirm that you can open a few files from the backup. A copy you haven’t checked may not contain everything you expect.

If an old drive is failing or files are already missing, discuss that before attempting a large transfer.

Set up the essentials

Work through initial setup, install available updates, and add the applications you actually need from trusted sources. Check that you can sign in to your everyday accounts.

  • Connect to your network.
  • Check display, keyboard, mouse, and audio preferences.
  • Connect your printer or other peripherals.
  • Review sign-in and account protection options.

Try a normal day’s tasks

Open a document, make a video call if you use one, print a page, and try your important applications. Confirm that the files you expected are present and readable.

Keep the old computer available until you’re confident the new setup covers your needs.

Plan what happens to the old device

Before selling, donating, recycling, or handing over the old computer, make sure your files are backed up and discuss how to remove your personal data properly. The right approach depends on the device and storage type.
